What to pack for your surf trip to Indonesia

What to pack for your surf trip to Indonesia
  • If you plan to island hop, pack lightly. We're seasoned Indo travellers and we still overpacked. Lugging bags and board bags from car to car and ferry to ferry is a nightmare. (And, It's really easy to do laundry over there)
  • Use your board bag as your suitcase, if you can. Don't forget to pay for oversized luggage and extra weight.
  • Bring a surf hat, trust us – we spent three months in Indo and the selection of surf hats there is mediocre at best
    • El Dingo surf hats have been shred-tested on some of Indonesia's best breaks. No matter your surf level, they'll stay on and keep you shady.
  • Bring a rashie, the options to buy from there are dismal and expensive.
  • Long sleeve shirt for post-surf chilling and sun protection, also can be worn in the water. But beware, the floppy sleeves can be a nuisance when surfing.
  • Backpack for day trips
  • Reef booties – get them from the Sideways outlet. They're more expensive in Indo (we spent double the price) and you're still buying from big brands like RipCurl when you get there.
  • First aid for reef cuts
    • Antiseptic cream
    • Bandages
  • Zinc
  • A long sleeve swimsuit or surf leggings. Here are some of our favourites.
  • A sarong (or buy one there from one of the locals). They're great for covering up to protect yourself from the sun. They are also handy for covering up in more religious areas of Indonesia.
